How your sponsorship changes a life

A Child Is Waiting. You Can Be the Answer.

Children do not wait for the right moment to need help. Right now, thousands of orphaned children registered with Human Appeal are urgently waiting for a sponsor. Each one has a name, a story, and a future that depends on the mercy of someone like you. Each one lost their father or both parents to war, disaster, or poverty.

Without a sponsor, they face a future of hunger, school dropout, and exploitation.

The scale of the global crisis:

  • An estimated 143–210 million children worldwide are orphaned.
  • Approximately 5,700 children become orphaned every single day.
  • Over 387 million children live in extreme poverty globally.
  • In Gaza, the ongoing conflict has caused a 55% surge in newly orphaned children who have lost everything overnight.

When a child loses their father, they lose their family's income. They are pulled from school to earn money. They become vulnerable to malnutrition, illness, and exploitation. The cycle of poverty closes around them unless someone steps in.

That someone can be you — not just once, but every month. A consistent, reliable presence in a child's life that gives them the stability to grow, learn, and look toward the future with hope.

Sponsoring an orphan is not a one-time act of charity. It is a sustained commitment that builds a child's life month by month, year by year, until they are able to stand on their own.

What your sponsorship provides

Warming their hearts and comforting their minds

Providing orphans with suitable, dignified clothing, and keeping them warm and dry throughout the year.

Ensuring they receive nourishing meals

Your sponsorship helps to provide regular food to the child you sponsor, allowing them to thrive.

Providing safe and secure housing

Having the stability of a home to return to at the end of the day helps children to focus in school and provides them with the security and stability that all children need in order to flourish.

Guaranteeing and protecting their learning

Providing their caregiver with a regular income helps orphans to return to school, pay for their learning materials, and build a brighter future.

Supporting the whole family

When a widowed mother has an income for one of her children, the whole family is supported through shelter and food, and through the easing of the financial burden on the family.

Ensuring they receive health and medical care

Providing orphans with proper health care, routine check-ups and immunisations.

Give a child a chance of a brighter future

Honouring a Prophetic tradition

In his lifetime, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) - himself an orphan - emphasized caring for orphans and promised those who did so a special place in Jannah. It's a testament to the beauty of supporting the most vulnerable within our ummah - the children who have lost their caregivers.

Sponsoring an orphan isn't just following the legacy of the Messenger (PBUH); it also assists the child's mother or caregiver with the expenses for:

  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Healthcare
  • Housing
  • School supplies

Sponsor an Orphan in Palestine

Sponsor an Orphan in Palestine

The decimation of Gaza has left in its wake a devastating future for its children. More than 38,000 children have been newly orphaned, and 41% of families in Gaza are caring for a child that isn’t their own. For an orphan, not only do they have to cope the loss of their parents, but they suddenly have to think about how they will eat, how they will afford to survive.

What Is Orphan Sponsorship in Islam?

Orphan sponsorship, known as kafala in Arabic, is the act of providing ongoing financial and moral support to a child who has lost their father or both parents. In Islam, it is one of the most meritorious acts a believer can perform — mentioned over twenty times in the Qur'an and emphasised repeatedly in the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Prophet himself (PBUH) was an orphan. He understood first-hand the vulnerability orphaned children face, and dedicated his life to elevating their status. To sponsor an orphan is to follow his Sunnah of mercy and to draw closer to him in this life and the next.

The Qur'an does not merely encourage care for orphans — it links neglecting them to weak faith (Surah 107:1–2). Caring for an orphan is also a Sadaqah Jariyah — ongoing worship whose reward continues long after the act itself.

"And they give food, in spite of their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive." — Qur'an, 76:8

Frequently Asked Questions about Orphan Sponsorship

  • What is orphan sponsorship?

Orphan sponsorship is a way to provide ongoing financial support to the mother of caregiver of an orphan who has lost their father or both parents. They receive a stipend every three months that covers the cost of their food, clothes, healthcare, and school supplies. It allows a child to stay in school – which is a condition of the sponsorship - helping them to break the cycle of poverty and have the skills for a brighter future.

  • Where does the money go when I sponsor my orphaned child?

When you sponsor an orphan, the funds go to the orphan child’s caregiver, usually the child’s mother, grandparent or family guardian.

  • If the orphan’s guardian receives the money, how do you know they spend it on the orphan?

Every family has different needs and we understand that the mother or caregiver is the best judge of how to help each child. We empower this person to spend the funds in a way that best helps the child in the way that they most need, usually through providing food, education, shelter or clothes. We continue to offer safeguarding and in-person checks with each family to ensure that the child is benefiting from your sponsorship.

  • Does the child I sponsor go to school?

Yes. A condition of our sponsorship is that the child you sponsor must attend school if they are old enough and have no physical condition that prevents them from attending.

  • Can I contact the orphan child that I sponsor?

Child protection is of utmost importance in this program, so we don’t allow sponsors to contact the sponsored child via any means, including letters, email or video calls. You’ll receive updates on the child’s development and progress every six months, providing you with information on their education, living situation, and well-being.

  • How often do I get updates on the orphan child I sponsor?

We provide you with reports twice a year, which include photographs and drawings, as well as information about the child’s family, school, performance at school and well-being.

No. By sponsoring a child, you provide financial support to allow them to have access to a quality education and a better quality of life. • How do you select the orphans who receive sponsorship?

We apply strict program criteria for orphan sponsorship programs. Every child must meet our minimum requirements for the orphan sponsorship program – including having lost their father - so that we can ensure we are reaching orphans most in need.

  • How does the sponsored child benefit from my support?

The child you sponsor will no longer need to worry about the daily cost of living, allowing them to attend school where they can gain the knowledge, skills and personal development for a better future. Sponsorship safeguards and protects the child through regular monitoring by our child welfare officers, while ensuring they have a reasonable standard of living, a caring home, as well access to healthcare, clothing, and school supplies.

  • Can I send extra monetary or non-monetary gifts?

You can send additional financial support to the child by contacting our Donor Care Team, or by setting up a second sponsorship fund for them if you wish. You can also send Eid or Ramadan gifts by donating to this program and inputting the ID number of the orphan you sponsor. We don’t accept non-financial gifts as we know the guardian of the child is best placed to decide what they need, and we cannot give out children’s addresses for their own safety.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “I and the one who sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like these two” – and he gestured with his forefinger and middle finger, holding them close together.

In Islam, sponsoring an orphaned child is one of the most righteous deeds a Muslim can perform.
