What Is Zakat al‑Fitr (Fitrana)?

Zakat al‑Fitr is a mandatory charity given before the Eid al‑Fitr prayer. It is intended to:

  • Purify the observer from any shortcomings during their Ramadan fast.
  • Ensure that every Muslim family has food on the day of Eid.
  • Support those experiencing hardship, hunger, or displacement.
  • Every eligible Muslim must give Zakat al‑Fitr on behalf of themselves and their dependents.

See Where Your Zakat al-Fitr Goes

“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) ordained Zakat al Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as zakah for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.” (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah)

Zakat al-Fitr: Your Questions Answered

  • What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr (also known as Fitrana or Sadaqat ul-Fitr) is a mandatory charitable donation that every eligible Muslim must give before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, marking the end of Ramadan. It serves two sacred purposes: to purify the fasting person from any shortcomings during the month, and to ensure that families living in poverty can also celebrate Eid with dignity and joy.

Unlike the annual Zakat, which is calculated as 2.5% of qualifying wealth, Zakat al-Fitr is a fixed amount per person — making it one of the most straightforward obligations in Islam to fulfil.

  • How much is Zakat al-Fitr in Canada for 2026?

The Zakat al-Fitr amount for Ramadan 2026 in Canada is $10 per person. This is calculated based on the approximate value of a sa'a — a traditional measure of staple food — and is set in consultation with Islamic scholars to reflect current local costs. Human Appeal Canada updates this figure annually.

To calculate your total household Zakat al-Fitr, multiply $10 by the number of people you are responsible for — yourself, your spouse, your children, and any other dependants in your care.

  • Who must pay Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim who possesses food beyond their own immediate needs on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. It must be paid for every member of the household, including children and elderly dependants. The head of household is responsible for paying on behalf of all those under their care.

If a person is in a state of genuine financial hardship and does not have enough food beyond their own basic needs, they are not required to pay Zakat al-Fitr — they may in fact be eligible to receive it.

  • When must Zakat al-Fitr be paid?

Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer on the morning of Eid al-Fitr. This deadline is a condition of the obligation itself — not a recommendation. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was explicit: Zakat al-Fitr paid before the prayer is accepted as Zakat; paid after the prayer, it becomes voluntary Sadaqah and the Zakat al-Fitr obligation is not considered fulfilled.

Many scholars permit — and even encourage — giving Zakat al-Fitr one or two days before Eid to ensure distributions can be organised and delivered in time. Giving early does not reduce the reward; it increases the likelihood that families receive their food before Eid morning.

  • What is the difference between Zakat al-Fitr and Zakat?

Zakat al-Mal is the annual 2.5% wealth tax paid on savings and assets held above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and applies year-round based on a Muslim's individual wealth calculation.

Zakat al-Fitr is separate. It is a fixed per-person payment made at the end of Ramadan, tied to the completion of the fast rather than to wealth. Both are obligatory, and both serve to purify and redistribute wealth — but they are calculated and paid differently. Both can be given through Human Appeal Canada.

  • Is Zakat al-Fitr the same as Fitrana?

Yes. Fitrana is simply a colloquial term for Zakat al-Fitr, commonly used in South Asian Muslim communities. Sadaqat ul-Fitr is another equivalent term. All three describe the same obligatory end-of-Ramadan charity. The most formal Islamic term is Zakat al-Fitr.

  • Can I pay Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of my whole family?

Yes — and you are required to. The head of household is responsible for paying Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of every member of the family: spouse, children, elderly parents in your care, and any other dependants. Simply multiply $10 by the number of people in your household to find your total.

Human Appeal's donation form includes a household calculator so you can give for your whole family in a single payment.

  • Who receives Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is distributed to those who are eligible to receive Zakat — primarily the poor and those in severe need. Human Appeal directs Zakat al-Fitr to verified families in crisis zones and communities affected by conflict, displacement, and poverty. Distributions are timed to reach recipients before the Eid prayer, so families have food to celebrate with on Eid morning.

By giving through Human Appeal, your Zakat al-Fitr reaches where the need is genuinely greatest — assessed by our field teams across 27 countries.

  • Is Zakat al-Fitr tax-deductible in Canada?

Yes. Human Appeal Foundation Canada is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA No. 749 264545 RR001). All eligible donations, including Zakat al-Fitr, qualify for a Canadian charitable tax receipt. Your receipt will be issued by email shortly after your donation is processed.

  • Can I give Zakat al-Fitr online?

Yes. Human Appeal Canada's secure online donation platform allows you to give your Zakat al-Fitr quickly and easily. Your donation is processed securely, a tax receipt is issued automatically, and your obligation is fulfilled — in under two minutes. Giving online also means Human Appeal receives your donation immediately, allowing us to plan distributions well in advance of Eid.

  • What if I missed paying Zakat al-Fitr in previous years?

If you missed Zakat al-Fitr in previous years, you should give it as soon as possible. While it cannot retroactively be accepted as Zakat al-Fitr (since the deadline has passed), it is given as Sadaqah — a voluntary charity — and is still a means of seeking forgiveness and fulfilling your duty to those in need. Going forward, setting a reminder before Ramadan ends each year is the best way to ensure you never miss it again.
