Clean Water for Displaced Families

Four consecutive rainy seasons have failed in Somalia. Wells are completely dry, livestock are dying, and families who had nothing to begin with are now walking for hours just to find water that could make their children deeply sick.

When the Rain Stops Coming

Somalia is facing a catastrophic drought emergency following four consecutive failed rainy seasons. This crisis has devastated a country already carrying the weight of decades of conflict, leaving nearly 4 million internally displaced people in a heavily underfunded humanitarian environment.

Over 5 million people are affected, with half a million forced from their homes entirely. Wells and boreholes are drying up completely across multiple regions. In places like Gedo, the cost of a single 200-litre barrel of trucked water has jumped from $2.50 to $6, a price that families with zero income simply cannot pay. When the water vanishes, crops fail, animals die, and mothers are left making impossible choices between finding food and finding a safe drop of water to keep their children alive.

Rebuilding Systems That Last

Human Appeal Canada is delivering clean water, permanent sanitation, and solar lighting to displaced communities, targeting the most urgent needs of families uprooted by this crisis. In the Kahda district, we are completely overhauling water facilities inside a major camp for displaced families. Our project brings reliable clean water, handwashing stations to stop the spread of fatal waterborne illnesses, and vital solar lighting to keep women and girls safe after dark. This intervention brings continuous, safe water to 3,600 people who currently have no reliable source.

This is not a temporary water delivery patch. This is lasting infrastructure designed to serve these families for years to come.

Somalia Clean Water Initiative FAQs

  • Why does Somalia need urgent water assistance right now?

Following four consecutive failed rainy seasons, the country is facing a severe drought emergency. Natural wells and boreholes have completely dried up, forcing half a million people to flee their homes. The price of trucked water has more than doubled, leaving millions of displaced people with no choice but to rely on unsafe, contaminated water sources.

  • What does the Somalia Water Fund actually provide?

The fund pays for the structural overhaul of water and sanitation systems in the Kahda district displacement camp. This provides 3,600 people with continuous clean water, functioning handwashing stations, and safe sanitation facilities.

  • Why is solar lighting included in a water project?

Solar lighting is critical for basic human safety and dignity in displacement camps. Without light after sunset, women and girls face severe protection risks when accessing sanitation facilities. Solar lights protect vulnerable families and allow for safe movement after dark.

  • Why are the water stations solar-powered?

Sudan's power grid is highly unstable due to ongoing conflict. By powering the water stations with solar energy, they operate fully independently of the main electrical grid, ensuring a continuous water supply during blackouts.

  • Can I donate on behalf of a deceased relative?

Yes. Providing clean water is one of the most highly recommended forms of ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) in Islam. You can add the name of your loved one at checkout, and the blessings of every drop of clean water will benefit them.

Human Appeal is committed to providing aid in the country or program that you select. In the event we complete the program, exceed the required funds, or are denied access to a particular country for reasons beyond our control, Human Appeal reserves the right to reallocate your donation to another program where it is needed most.
