Cochlear Implant for Enas: Helping a Girl in Syria Hear and Go to School

Enas is 10. When she was a year old, her mother noticed she didn't turn when she was called, but she understood hand signals. A hearing test confirmed what the family feared. Enas lives with her mother, grandmother, and siblings in Al-Bashaer Camp in northwest Syria, and she has never been to school. Hearing aids didn’t help her, so her mother has spent years looking for support for a cochlear implant.

Cosmetic Prosthetic Hand for Shahd: Restoring a Child’s Confidence in Syria

Shahd is 10, in fourth grade, and was born with a deformity in her left hand. She came home from school in tears because of bullying, and at the table she told her family she wanted to be like her siblings. Her father took her to health centres across Aleppo and Afrin with no luck. Then a Human Appeal mobile clinic came to their village. After a home assessment and a hospital visit, Shahd was fitted with a cosmetic prosthetic hand.

Eyelid Surgery and Corneal Transplant for Wateen: Treatment for a Child in Syria

Wateen was three months old when a fever sent her family rushing to the hospital. She developed a blood clotting disorder and needed transfusions for a month and a half, and her illness left her with deformities affecting her eyelids, cornea, and limbs. Today she can barely see or walk, and she only drinks milk. Her mother says she stays home, sitting or lying down, while her brothers and sisters play. Her treatment is happening in stages: it began with surgery to rebuild her eyelids, and a corneal transplant is planned to help restore her vision. Her mother says the cost of surgery is very high, and without help the family would have waited a very long time for her father to save enough.
