Somalia School Sanitation
In Somalia, over 50% of adolescent girls miss school every single month. They don't stay home because they want to. They stay home because their school lacks a private toilet, clean water, and a safe place to manage their hygiene.
Your donation changes that, giving a girl the privacy and dignity she needs to stay in class.
The Barrier Nobody Talks About
Somalia currently has one of the lowest school enrolment rates in the world. Only 24% of children attend primary school. For girls, that figure drops to 21% in cities and plummets to just 17% in rural areas.
Behind these alarming numbers is a barrier that is rarely discussed but almost entirely solvable:
This is not an abstract problem. It is a highly practical one with a practical solution, and your donation funds it.
Removing the Barrier. Restoring Her Education.
When a girl has access to a clean, private toilet at school, she comes back. When she receives basic sanitary supplies, she comes back. And when her teachers understand her needs and treat her with dignity rather than shame, she stays.
Human Appeal's Somalia School Sanitation project works directly across three schools to eliminate every one of these obstacles. We do not just build facilities: we transform the physical and social environment so girls can learn without fear, embarrassment, or interruption.
What Your Donation Provides:
Private, Safe Toilets: Constructing 12 new gender-separated toilet blocks equipped with privacy walls and secure locks, alongside upgrading 12 existing facilities to meet strict hygiene standards. For a girl with nowhere else to go, a locked door is the difference between going to school and staying home.
Clean Water & Sanitation: Installing 12 handwashing stations stocked with soap, supported by 6 water storage tanks that guarantee a reliable supply. Clean hands and running water are not luxuries: they are the foundation of a safe school day.
Sanitary Kits for 2,500 Girls: Providing reusable pads, soap, underwear and discrete disposal bags so adolescent girls can manage their periods safely and comfortably. Emergency supply hubs are also maintained in every school so no girl is caught unprepared.
Community Education & Advocacy: Establishing 10 student-led hygiene clubs to promote peer support, while training teachers and holding community awareness sessions to dismantle long-held stigmas surrounding menstruation and encourage families to prioritize their daughters' education.
Why This Matters Beyond the Classroom
A girl who stays in school is significantly more likely to delay early marriage, earn an independent income, and invest in her own children's future. The ripple effect of keeping just one girl in education extends across generations.
Furthermore, this is a matter of public health. According to the WHO, Somalia experienced over 18,000 cholera cases in 2025, with children among the most vulnerable. Schools without clean water and functioning toilets are severe health risks. Your donation addresses both the education gap and the health crisis at exactly the same time.
For a girl in Somalia, a toilet with a working lock and a kit with reusable pads is one of the most profoundly beneficial gifts she will ever receive. It is not just symbolic, it is practical, and life-changing.
