Centred in Yaracuy state, this historic disaster sent violent shockwaves tearing through heavily populated areas, including Caracas, La Guaira, Aragua, and Carabobo.It is the strongest earthquake to hit the nation in more than 125 years.

Because the disaster hit on a major national holiday, families were gathered together at home.In an instant, residential blocks, high-rise buildings, and entire neighbourhoods collapsed into heaps of concrete and twisted metal. Right now, the scene is one of frantic desperation. Parents are digging through rubble with their bare hands, searching for missing children. Hundreds of structures, including hospitals, schools, and the Venezuelan Red Cross headquarters, have suffered severe structural collapse or critical damage.With gas lines shut off to prevent explosions, the subway suspended, power grids down, and telecommunications severed, millions are left in the dark, terrified by ongoing aftershocks and entirely cut off from the outside world.
